July 1967. San Rafael. I was a cost analyst in SP's Bureau of Transportation Research, and one of my assignments was to document the costs and revenues associated with the Sausalito branch, which was a candidate for abandonment. I used the assignment as an excuse to ride the local from San Rafael that served both Sausalito and Tiburon. At the time the Puerto Suello tunnel north of San Rafael was closed following a tunnel fire, and the only cars coming and going were via the barge interchange with the Santa Fe at Tiburon.
