In the 21st Century the south end of the NWP slowly returned to life. Government money was found to correct the FRA defects and a third incarnation of the Northwestern Pacific restored freight operations as far north as Windsor. And soon big bucks went into turning the line from Santa Rosa to Larkspur into a modern commuter railroad, with heavy welded rail and concrete ties. Today Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit runs passenger trains during the day and the NWP freights sneak in during the night. The line north of Windsor remains unused and its future uncertain.
