I have visited the Sumpter Valley three times. The first was a brief stop while passing through but I managed to get a shot of one of their regular passenger trains pulled by the heisler. In February 2014 Pete Lerro ran a fabulous winter photo shot. And most recently I went to the October 2018 fall photographers special run by the railroad.
Today's Sumpter Valley Railroad is an amazing recreation, built from virtually nothing with entirely volunteer labor. When the railroad ceased operation in the early 1950's the equipment was scattered and the track entirely removed. The volunteers acquired some of the original right of way, begged and borrowed rail and ties to relay seven miles of track, and located, transported home, and restored two original locomotives, three cabooses, and various other rolling stock both native and non-native to the line.
