Norfolk Southern

The SOU 4501 heads east through Pittsburgh over the Pittsburgh and West Virginia enroute home rails at Strasburg, Virginia via the P&WV, WM, and N&W. The milepost would put this at West Liberty. This was part of the famous "Alphabet Route" between Chicago and New York. If I remember correctly this was part of the 1973 version of the Independence Limited. July 1973.

The Independence Limited on the now abandonned Western Maryland Salisbury Viaduct near Meyersdale, PA. The 4501 was making a ferry move from Pittsburg to Hagerstown via the P&WV and WM. Thanks to several viewers for this information. July 1973.

I believe this is on the former Southern mainline south of Washington D.C., probably circa 1971-3.

Saluda grade on the Southern. That looks to be a runaway track up the hill on the right.

In nice light and cool morning air, the Independence Limited crosses above Bramwell, WV enroute from Bluefield, WV to Portsmouth, OH. One viewer wrote, "Better known as Cooper Tunnel & Trestle as well as being the quintessential photo location on the old N&W, and with so many varied angles & positions at the same site to shoot from....Today, the house in the foreground is long gone from a fire many years ago and many of the angles are overgrown....." June 25, 1986.

The Independence Limited left Bluefield and will end its day at Portsmouth, OH. June 25, 1986.
