I was something a latecomer in discovering Canada and the CPR.  While going to graduate school in Philadelphia I visited eastern Canada a couple of times to ride some CN steam charters from Toronto, and a train riding trip to the Maritimes that included CP's Atlantic Limited.  But I was too busy chasing steam internationally to pay much attention to the CP diesels up north.  Then in 1988 Bill Loomis convinced me a train chasing trip to Alberta and British Columbia would be interesting....and it was.  I am glad I got there in time to record the candy stripe SD40's, that are so photogenic.  The CP's lines through the Rockies are something special when it comes to rail photography.
