After the DRGW abandoned freight operations in 1968, I figured it was all over and went on to other things.   The DRGW continued the Silverton branch as a seasonal tourist operation, and I did visit that briefly in October 1969 while enroute from California to a new assignment in Texas.  I heard bits and pieces about the efforts to save the line over Cumbres, but it seemed rather unlikely something so ambitious would really happen.  Even when the C&TS did happen it seemed unlikely to be very permanent.  But I did manage a couple of visits.  In October 1972 Scenic Railways ran the very first charter freight.  And a few years later I visited to ride one of the regular trains.  But in general the former DRGW was off my radar screen for the next 14 years.
