September 1964. Heading east from Chama.

October 1962. An eastbound freight has departed Carbon Junction for Chama. The grade east from Carbon Junction was a steady 2 percent for about seven miles to the top of the mesa just west of Falfa. Where this picture was taken is now the middle of a WalMart parking lot.

Our chartered train rounds the oft photographed curve near the Zulu village of Mjila on the rugged and never completed Cape Natal line. At first glance Garratt locomotives look strange to Americans used to conventional articulated engines, but it does not take long to become enamored with these mighty beasts. Even on narrow Cape gauge (3'6") rails they are impressive. Between Mjila and Owambeni. June 2, 2007.

October 2015. I got off the train in the wrong place but the resulting going away shot is one of my favorites.
